Weighted Grade Calculator

Work out your final grade from each item's score and weight.

Calculated locally in your browser.

Each line: an optional name, then grade %, then weight %.

How is a weighted grade calculated?

Weighted grade = Σ (grade × weight) ÷ Σ (weight). Each grade is multiplied by its weight, the products are summed, then divided by the total weight. Heavily weighted items move your grade more. Example: scores of 90, 80 and 70 with weights 40, 30 and 30 give 8100 ÷ 100 = 81%, a B.

Understanding your result

Because items are weighted, a high score on a heavily weighted exam moves your grade more than the same score on a small quiz. If your weights do not add up to 100, the calculator still works — it divides by whatever total you enter, which is handy for grading partway through a course.

Formula and method

Weighted grade = Σ (grade × weight) ÷ Σ (weight). Each grade is multiplied by its weight, the products are summed, and the total is divided by the sum of the weights.

Worked example

Scores of 90, 80 and 70 with weights 40, 30 and 30 give (90×40 + 80×30 + 70×30) ÷ 100 = 8100 ÷ 100 = 81% (a B).

How to use this tool

  1. Enter each item on its own line as grade, weight.
  2. Add an optional name before a colon, such as "Final: 70, 30".
  3. Read the weighted grade and letter grade.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Swapping the order — enter grade first, then weight.
  • Assuming weights must total 100; they do not have to.
  • Leaving out an item, which changes the total weight.

About the Weighted Grade Calculator

Frequently asked questions

Do the weights have to add up to 100?

No. The calculator divides by the total weight you enter, so partial sets and weights that total more or less than 100 both work.

How do I include a category name?

Put the name before a colon, for example "Midterm: 90, 40". The name is optional and only used for display.

What letter grade does it use?

A standard scale: 90+ is A, 80+ B, 70+ C, 60+ D, below 60 F.
