%

How do you calculate a tip and split it?

Tip = Bill × Tip% ÷ 100, Total = Bill + Tip, and Per person = Total ÷ People. Tipping customs vary by country, with common ranges of 10–20% in many regions. For example, a 60 bill at 18% adds a 10.80 tip for a 70.80 total, which is 23.60 each between three people.

Understanding your result

Tipping customs vary by country. Common ranges are 10–20% in many regions; some include service charges instead.

Formula and method

Tip = Bill × Tip% ÷ 100. Total = Bill + Tip. Per person = Total ÷ People.

Assumptions and limitations

This calculator applies your chosen percentage to the bill and splits the total evenly between people. It does not know local tipping customs, whether a service charge is already included, or whether some diners ordered more. Adjust the percentage yourself to match regional norms and check the bill for any existing service charge.

Worked example

A 60 bill at 18% adds a 10.80 tip for a 70.80 total — 23.60 each between three people.

Frequently asked questions

Should I tip on tax?

Customs differ. Many people tip on the pre-tax subtotal, but tipping on the total is also common.

How do I split a bill unevenly between people?

This tool divides the total equally by the number of people. For uneven shares, calculate each person's portion of the bill separately, add the same tip percentage to each, and total them individually. The even-split result works best when everyone ordered roughly the same amount.

Does the per-person figure include the tip?

Yes. The per-person amount is the grand total, which is the bill plus the tip, divided by the number of people. Each person's share therefore already covers their portion of both the meal and the gratuity, so no further addition is needed.
