How do you calculate a discount and sale price?

Saved = Price × Discount ÷ 100, and Final price = Price − Saved. The final price is what you pay, while the saved amount is the reduction. Stacked discounts apply one after another rather than being added together. For example, a 120 item at 25% off saves 30, for a final price of 90.

Understanding your result

The final price is what you pay; the saved amount is the reduction. Stacked discounts apply one after another, not added together.

Formula and method

Saved = Price × Discount ÷ 100. Final price = Price − Saved.

Assumptions and limitations

This tool applies a straightforward percentage reduction to the price you enter and shows the saving. It does not include sales tax, shipping, coupons on top or loyalty points, and stacked discounts are applied one after another rather than summed. Treat the figure as an estimate for comparison, not a final checkout total.

Worked example

A 120 item at 25% off saves 30, for a final price of 90.

How to use this tool

  1. Enter the original price.
  2. Enter the discount percentage.
  3. Press Calculate.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Adding two discounts together instead of applying them in sequence.
  • Forgetting tax is usually added after the discount.

Frequently asked questions

Is tax included?

No. This shows the pre-tax discounted price. Use the GST or VAT calculator to add tax.

How do I calculate two discounts applied together?

Stacked discounts apply in sequence, not by adding the percentages. A 20% then 10% reduction is not 30% off; the second cut is taken from the already reduced price. Work out the first discount, then run the result through the tool again for the second.

Can I find the original price from the sale price?

This calculator works forward from the original price to the sale price and saving. To reverse it, divide the sale price by one minus the discount as a decimal; for example a price after 25% off is divided by 0.75 to recover the original figure.
