The automatic shrink-to-fit matters for the same practical reason: a caption that overflows the frame or covers the subject destroys the joke, so the font adapting to the text is more useful than a fixed size that only works for short captions.

The starting font size is a percentage of the image height. Text is wrapped greedily against the available width, and if the resulting block exceeds about a third of the image height the font shrinks and re-wraps until it fits. The outline is drawn at roughly 11% of the font size.

Captions are limited to the top and bottom in the classic layout — there is no free text placement, no dragging, and no speech bubbles or stickers. There is no built-in template library, so you supply the image. Impact is used where installed and otherwise falls back to the nearest condensed bold font, so the exact look varies slightly between devices.

On a 800 × 600 image at 11% text size, captions start at 66 pixels. A long bottom caption might wrap to two lines and shrink to 52 pixels so the block stays clear of the image centre.
