Gravel & Mulch Calculator

Estimate the volume and weight of gravel, mulch, sand or topsoil for an area.

Calculated instantly in your browser.

Units
Inches (imperial) or centimetres (metric).

How do you calculate how much gravel or mulch you need?

Volume = length × width × depth, and Weight = volume × the material's density (gravel ≈ 1.6 t/m³, mulch ≈ 0.45 t/m³). For example, a 20 ft × 10 ft area at 3 inches deep needs about 1.85 cubic yards of gravel. Order around 10% extra for settling and uneven ground; densities are approximate and vary by supplier and moisture.
