How is dimensional weight calculated?
Multiply length by width by height, each rounded to a whole unit first, then divide by the carrier’s divisor — 139 for UPS and FedEx in inches, 5000 for international express in centimetres. You are billed on whichever is greater, dimensional or actual, rounded up to the next whole unit.
Understanding your result
Dimensional weight exists because space on a vehicle runs out before weight does. A truck full of pillows hits its volume limit while barely loaded, so carriers price by whichever constraint the parcel actually consumes — and for most e-commerce shipments, that is space rather than mass. Two details cost sellers real money because they are easy to miss. The first is that each dimension is rounded to a whole unit before being multiplied, not after: a box measuring 12.5 inches on each side is treated as 13 × 13 × 13, which is 2,197 cubic inches rather than 1,953 — a 12% jump in billable weight from half an inch. The second is that the final figure is rounded up to the next whole unit, so 12.05 lb bills as 13 lb. Together these mean box size is worth optimising far more aggressively than most sellers do, because the relationship is cubic: shaving 10% off every dimension cuts the dimensional weight by nearly 27%. Padding a product into the next box size up is one of the most expensive habits in small-parcel shipping.
Formula and method
Dimensional weight is length × width × height ÷ the carrier’s divisor, with each dimension rounded to the nearest whole unit first. Billable weight is the greater of the dimensional and actual weights, rounded up to the next whole pound or kilogram — never to the nearest.
Assumptions and limitations
Divisors are set by each carrier and revised periodically, and negotiated contract rates frequently use a different figure from the published retail one — the presets fill in commonly published values but the field stays editable for that reason. This calculates billable weight only, not price: zone, service level, fuel surcharges, residential delivery and peak-season fees all sit on top. Oversize warnings use common US parcel thresholds and vary by carrier and service.
Worked example
A 12 × 12 × 12 inch box holding 3 lb of goods has a volume of 1,728 cubic inches. Divided by 139 that is 12.43 lb dimensional, so you are billed 13 lb — more than four times what the parcel actually weighs.
